Transfer to La Fortuna

Today you will be driven to La Fortuna de San Carlos, a charming and quiet town that sits at the base of one of the most spectacular volcanoes in all the world. It is about a 3 hour drive from San Jose. “La Fortuna” is Spanish for “The Fortune”, and the city is aptly named due its ample supply of tourist attractions and extremely fertile lands.

It offers panoramic views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano and surrounding forests. Until December 2010, it was Costa’s Rica’s most active volcano. The volcano is just over 6 miles (10 km) away from town, making it a beautiful sight from the town square as well as almost every hotel in the area. The volcano has not had any lava eruptions since December 2010 but is still considered active.

Arenal Volcano Guided Hike

Today you will start the tour with a 20 minute drive travelling to the entrance of the Arenal National Park. You can visit the ranger station and read up on the history of the area before your hike. Then we will hike through well-groomed, easy trails that skirt the base of the Arenal Volcano. This area was devastated by a lava flow in 1968.  As a result, the area has very little vegetation. You will have the opportunity to see, touch, and walk on hardened lava flows from a smaller eruption that happened in 1992. This hike provides perfect photo opportunities and magnificent views of the impressive Arenal Volcano, the pristine Lake Arenal, and the extinct volcano Cerro Chato.  Kids, families and all nature lovers will enjoy this tour for the gorgeous views and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
