Today you will be driven to La Fortuna de San Carlos, a charming and quiet town that sits at the base of one of the most spectacular volcanoes in all the world. It is about a 3 hour drive from San Jose. “La Fortuna” is Spanish for “The Fortune”, and the city is aptly named due its ample supply of tourist attractions and extremely fertile lands.
It offers panoramic views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano and surrounding forests. Until December 2010, it was Costa’s Rica’s most active volcano. The volcano is just over 6 miles (10 km) away from town, making it a beautiful sight from the town square as well as almost every hotel in the area. The volcano has not had any lava eruptions since December 2010 but is still considered active.

In this tropical paradise farm-property with a prime location, the family created Miradas Arenal Hotel & Hot Springs with a first phase of 11 Bungalows, a pool area, a pop restaurant, hot springs, exuberant gardens, fruit trees and regular trees (which attract a wide variety of bird species). The family’s main activity is milk cattle production; therefore, you will be able to witness the production process and taste the final products on your table.

Get ready for one rapid after another, including our favorite stretch of Class III and Class IV rapids in the country. This is the day that will truly test the skills you learned on the previous day. The second day is significantly longer on the river, with 14 miles (23 km) to travel and about 30 rapids. You will enter the famous Pacuare River Gorge, which is 5 miles (8 km) of some of the best whitewater Costa Rica has to offer. The rapids here are “Terciopelo Snake”, “Double Drop”, “Upper and Lower Huacas”, and “Pinball” to name a few. You will also see the Huacas watefall, a 150 foot (46 m) dramatic drop into the river. When you’re almost at the end, get your camera ready to shoot one of the most beautiful places on this river: Dos Montanas Canyon.
